What is Newbquest?
The newbquest project is an experiment in public learning. The subject I’m trying to learn is how to make video games. The theory that I’m trying to test is that by blogging about and sharing my progress towards my goals that it will help me to achieve them and help other people who are in the same boat I am in now: a boat far from land in the middle of a sea of know-nothingess. In the distance there’s a mountain. At the top of the mountain is a gold, shiny, finished, shipped game which attracts an audience and earns money.
It feels very very far away. In all likelihood it will take years to get there. I have no idea if I will get halfway up and roll back to the bottom, make a wrong turn and step off a cliff or get attacked by crazed eagles before I can reach the summit. That’s why it’s a newb quest and not a newb cruise or a newb stroll. This may not end well! Hopefully though in the process we can all learn something about making, finishing and selling games, as told from the perspective of someone who started off knowing very little about any of it.
In the process I hope to find some other people like me, and perhaps we can try and climb the mountain together, or at least warn each other of falling rocks. I’d love to connect with people of all experience levels who share my passion for games. If any of this resonates with you, get in touch! You can do that by leaving a comment anywhere on this site or connecting with me on any of the various linked social platforms. Starting off on a quest is lonely and it’s a lot more fun if you have some people to share it with.
Let’s go!
